The study plan
A 14-day sequence to your Universal card.
Commit to 30–45 minutes a day and you can pass in two weeks. The full breakdown — with the hardest topics per section and the mistakes to avoid — is in the practice test guide.
Days 1–3
Core focus
Read the Core guide, take three Core practice tests, and don't move on until you consistently score over 85%.
Days 4–5
Type I focus
Review small-appliance recovery rules and drill the trap questions on recovery equipment.
Days 6–8
Type II focus
The hardest section for most. Memorize the 2026 high-pressure leak-rate thresholds and drill hard.
Days 9–10
Type III focus
Low-pressure chiller operations — leak testing and purge units, even if you never touch a chiller.
Days 11–13
Full simulations
Three complete 100-question mock exams, timed at two hours to mirror the real environment.
Day 14
Rest & review
Flashcards for dates and numbers only. Then go pass your exam.

NATE Core
The Core exam everything else builds on.
For the Professional NATE path, every candidate passes the 50-question Core exam before a specialty. The practice test guide covers the six topic areas the exam rewards — and the mistakes that cost prepared technicians points.
Safety
Lockout procedures, personal protection and safe work habits.
Tools & measurements
Meter use, pressure logic and confirming field conditions.
Electrical basics
Core circuit logic, components, switches and troubleshooting.
Heat transfer
Thermodynamics, sensible vs latent heat and airflow.
